Dutchman William Caycedo graces Adult Only with his presence, as the label hits its 49th release. One of the newest members of the SlapFunk family from the Netherlands, William is young, hungry and talented – bringing that fresh energy to Adult Only with aplomb. His dalliances with hip hop and breakbeat demonstrate his ability to move between styles with confidence and panache, and this four-track EP features a whole host of avant-garde sounds that fit the Adult Only ethos perfectly.
William gets to work right away on side A with ‘For Ya Mind’, which kicks off with a stuttered break loop slowly developing into a more familiar 4×4-esque rhythm. Wave after wave of unusual sounds flows in and out of background, building the atmosphere before an unusual, winding b-line drops in.
Up next is ‘Synthesized’, a track that opens with a collection of subtle effects that work in unison to create a steady rhythm. A rugged bassline is introduced intermittently at first, before becoming a permanent part of the track and it’s soon joined by crisp percussion. A delicate yet groovy cut.
On the flip we get ‘Funked Out Loced Out’, which features more of William’s signature sounds from leftfield. Pumping beats really get this one going and a morose bassline chugs away at the low end. A chilling riff creates a slightly eerie feel on this cut, and those drums keep pushing on with razor sharp percussion keeping things energised.
Lastly ‘Catch 22’ rolls out with a delectable b-line that really gives this track its unique identity. Everything about this production is refreshing and just that little bit different, wait for the switch ups after two and three minutes – a sure sign that William was having tons of fun in the studio when he made this.
So, there it is, four sublime cuts from a producer who is clearly operating in his own zone… fresh, different and oh so funky. Make sure you check it out.
